Bulgarian Red Cross Steps up Old Clothes Collection Campaign

Twelve new containers for old clothes and textile items have been placed in the streets of Sofia this week as part of a nationwide campaign launched by the Bulgarian Red Cross (BRC).

"This is an idea we've borrowed from our partners in Germany, Austria and Switzerland," BRC Chairman Hristo Grigorov has told public radio broadcaster BNR.

Bulgaria to Send Aid to Migrants at Macedonia's Tabanovce

Bulgaria will deliver humanitarian assistance to refugees and migrants at Tabanovce transit center near Kumanovo in neighbouring  Macedonia on Thursday, the government in Sofia has said.

The aid consisting of mineral water and food supplies has been provided by the Bulgarian Red Cross and Bulgarian companies, the government press office said in a statement.

Bulgarian Army to Help Border Police Only in Emergency Cases - DefMin

Border protection will remain assigned mostly to border police and riot police even after deployment of troops has been completed, Bulgaria's Defense Minister Nikolay Nenchev has said.

He has told the Bulgarian National Television that the army, now authorized to provide assistance in border patrols, will stand ready to help in emergency situations.

Bulgaria's Army, Police to Conduct Joint Border Drills on Saturday

The joint training "Border 2016", which will assess the readiness of Bulgaria's army and police to react in the event of a heightened migrant pressure, will be conducted on Saturday in the region of Petrich, Sandanski and Kulata.

This was announced by the interior and defence ministries on Friday.

Blockade at Bulgaria-Greece Border Enters Third Day

Protesting Greek farmers are set to continue their strike action at the common border with Bulgaria, the Kulata-Promachonas crossing having been severely affected since Monday.

Greece's other neighbors are also affected by blockades as farmers are venting their anger at the Athens government which plans on scrapping subsidies and reforming the social insurance system.

Bulgarian Red Cross: 3-4 Million Refugees Expected to Reach Europe in Spring

The refugee crisis has not ended and a wave of 3-4 million people is expected to reach Europe in the spring.

This was stated by the chairperson of the Bulgarian Red Cross Hristo Grigorov in an interview for Focus news agency on the occasion of a round table entitled "Integration of refugees in Bulgaria: reality and challenges".

Bulgaria Detains 37 Illegal Migrants at Danube Bridge

The Bulgarian authorities detained on Tuesday a group of 37 illegal immigrants at the Danube Bridge border checkpoint.

Among the detained people were women, children and a pregnant woman, BGNES news agency reports.

The illegal immigrants were hidden in a TIR truck with a Turkish licence plate, driven by a Romanian citizen.
