The Turkish nation and Turkey's diplomatic missions around the world will celebrate Victory Day today, marking the 99th anniversary of when Turkish armies succeeded in the Great Offensive under the leadership of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk against occupying Greek forces on Aug. 30 in 1922.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on Aug. 25 spoke out on Turkey's Victory Week, praising the resolution and determination shown by the nation during the 1919-1923 War of Independence.

The mere utterance of the word Vikings, or Northmen as they were also known, used to strike fear in the hearts of the British just before and during the high middle ages, once these raiders found their way to the west and mainland Europe. Their contact with the French and British has been a subject of extensive research, not to mention successful movies and TV series.
