Xi Jinping emerged from October's 20th Party Congress with tighter control over the ruling Communist Party - and, therefore, over China - than any leader since Mao Zedong.

The İzmir Metropolitan Municipality will organize an international economy meeting next month, which is dedicated to Türkiye's first economy congress held in İzmir a century ago.

"The Economy Congress of the Second Century will convene between Feb. 15 and 21, and the roadmap of the new century's economy will be shared with the nation," İzmir Mayor Tunç Soyer said on Jan. 19.

The mood in Ankara was not a bright one in the aftermath of the meeting between US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu in Washington, as it did not produce the results it anticipated, at least based on what is being discussed publicly. 

 Thousands of protesters poured into Peru's capital Thursday, clashing with police amid tear gas and smoke and demanding the ouster of President Dina Boluarte. Many came from remote Andean regions, where 55 people have died amid unrest since Peru's first president from a rural Andean background was removed from office last month.

Last week news dropped that the Biden administration reportedly will ask Congress to approve a $20 billion sale of F-16s to Turkey, coupled with a separate sale of F-35 fighters to Greece.

The sale of F-16s was also the focus of Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu's meeting with Secretary of State Antony Blinken in Washington on Wednesday.

As US Secretary of State Antony Blinken will be hosting his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu in Washington on Wednesday, the Biden administration will be moving ahead with its stated intention to supply Turkey with 40 new F-16s and modernization kits to upgrade 80 of its older ones.

The Washington-based American Hellenic Institute issued a statement on Monday "strongly reiterating" its opposition to the sale of F-16 fighter jets and upgrade kits to Turkey, just as US President Joe Biden is expected to ask Congress to green-light the deal.

Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu has reiterated Ankara's expectation over the smooth supply of 40 new F-16s and 79 modernization kits for the existing fleets from the United States, saying that the matter waits for the approval of Congress.

The U.S. administration is preparing to get congressional approval for a $20 billion sale of F-16 fighter jets to Türkiye, along with a separate sale of next-generation F-35 warplanes to Greece.
