Beekeepers protest in central Athens over rising production costs

Beekeepers from around Greece gathered in central Athens on Thursday to protest the problems facing their sector, including high production cost and the unfair competition from imported honey labelled as Greek.

Shortly after 9 a.m., police closed Amalia Avenue to traffic as protesters arrived at Syntagma Square, some with trucks.

Menendez reiterates opposition to sale of F-16 fighters to Turkey

The chairperson of the US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations has reiterated his opposition to the sale of F-16 fighters to Turkey, saying "Turkey has not done enough to be rewarded in this way."

"I continue to be against the sale of F-16s," Senator Bob Menendez told state broadcaster ERT, adding that the Erdogan government needs to stop its belligerent behavior towards Greece.

There will be a financial incentive of an additional 1,800 euros added to the wages of doctors who choose to work outside urban centers and move to the islands, according to Health Minister Thanos Plevris.

Gov't spokesman wades into new war of words with judiciary

In the latest war of words between the leftist government and the Greek judiciary, government spokesman Dimitris Tzanakopoulos told state broadcaster ERT on Monday that he did not understand why the opinion that judges should submit their declaration of assets electronically, like other civil servants, should be regarded as a political intervention.

Floods Caused by Heavy Rain in Greece Have Killed at Least 10

Floods caused by heavy rain have killed at least 10 people and caused destruction in three towns near the Greek capital, Athens, officials say, quoted by BBC. 

The industrial towns of Mandra, Nea Peramos and Megara, 27km (17 miles) west of Athens, were the most affected.

Many of the dead were elderly people whose bodies were found inside their homes, reports say.

Filis: Refugee rights not up for debate

Education Minister Nikos Filis on Monday brushed aside reactions from local communities in several parts of Greece to refugee children attending public schools, while putting off any debate on planned changes to religious classes in schools until after the end of the academic year.

"The state will not put rights issues up for discussion," Filis told state broadcaster ERT on Monday.
