Alarm sounded over improper use of antibiotics

With more than 1,500 deaths reported annually from infections caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria, Greece is second behind Italy among European Union countries that are facing a health crisis, according to survey data presented in Brussels - ahead of European Antibiotic Awareness Day on Sunday - by the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC). 

Mosquito control measures to be carried out in northern Attica

Authorities have announced the next areas for mosquito spraying in the wider Athens area.

Spraying will be conducted from August 13-20 in 12 municipalities in northern Attica: Halandri, Aghia Paraskevi, Holargos/Papagou, Nea Ionia, Pendeli, Maroussi, Vrilissia, Kifissia, Pefki/Lykovrissi, Psychico/Filothei, Iraklio and Metamorphosi.

Greece among EU countries with highest measles rates

European officials said on Tuesday that the spike in the number of measles cases in Europe was due to epidemics in Romania, Italy, Germany and Greece.

According to the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control, more than 14,400 cases were reported by 30 countries last year - compared with about 4,600 cases the year before.

Greece makes measles vaccination appeal amid European spike

Health authorities in Greece have issued a public appeal to participate in vaccination and booster shot programs following a spike in measles cases in the country amid an outbreak in Europe.

The Greek Center for Disease Control and Prevention said on Friday that 166 cases had been reported in the country in 2016-17, with an increase in recent days.
