BoG chief calls for a re-examination of tax exemptions

The governor of the Bank of Greece, Yannis Stournaras, called on the Finance Ministry leadership on Tuesday to re-examine all tax exemptions, stressing that "the country needs revenue."

Stournaras noted that the shadow economy in Greece exceeds 40 billion euro and that existing tax exemptions need to be evaluated as to whether they concern the truly vulnerable.

Probing professionals with discrepancies

Tax authorities are completing cross-checking on 3.8 million tax registration numbers yielding significant results about taxpayers with high gross receipts and zero profits, but that is not the end of the process: In the coming period, possibly within the month, cross checks will also begin for those who declare higher profits but there is still a big difference with their declared gross income

Japan 'on standby' to intervene as yen plummets

Japan's top currency official said yesterday that Tokyo was "on standby" to intervene after the yen fell to a new year-low against the dollar and plunged against the euro, Bloomberg reported.

The yen dropped below 151 against the dollar overnight after the Bank of Japan further loosened its control of bond yields but stuck with sub-zero short-term interest rates.

Platform for whistleblowers

A bonus of up to 3,000 euros is promised to taxpayers who identify tax dodgers by scanning receipts through the "appodixi" cellphone app and discovering that it is either not genuine or has not been forwarded to the Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE).

All tax breaks under review

The government will review all tax exemptions, including the discounts enjoyed by the 676,000 self-employed. In addition to tax exemptions for self-employed professionals and businesses, the various expenses that reduce the taxes of a number of professional groups, or completely exempt them from tax obligations, will also be looked at. 

Deadline extended due to Taxisnet overload

The Taxisnet overload this week, owing to the wave of tax returns filed ahead of the August 31 deadline, has led the Finance Ministry to extend the deadline yet again.

This time the deadline has been extended up to Monday, September 4, without any penalties for the individuals and corporation yet to submit their 2022 income declarations.

No IMF support sought: Ministry

The Treasury and Finance Ministry has denied speculations suggesting that Türkiye is seeking support from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and that a delegation from the fund will visit the country.

The ministry does not have an official invitation to the fund, officials from the ministry told state-run news agency Anadolu.
