Larissa battles forest blaze amid nationwide firefighting effort

A forest fire broke out in the Elafos area of Larissa, central Greece, with 70 fires reported nationwide in the past 24 hours, according to the fire brigade. 

In Larissa, 42 firefighters, supported by two foot patrol teams, 14 vehicles, and aircraft, are battling the blaze. 

Of the nationwide fires, 57 were swiftly contained, while 13 remain active.

A significant blaze engulfed a building on Gurgulyat Street, situated close to Sofia's iconic National Palace of Culture, prompting a swift emergency response last night. Initial reports, relayed by bTV, indicated that the fire originated on the roof of a central building in the heart of the city, unleashing chaos and requiring urgent intervention.

Tornado causes limited damages in Rhodes

A tornado that appeared in the northern part of the island of Rhodes, southeastern Greece, on Monday caused limited damages but no injuries, local authorities said. 

The tornado, which affected the area from Kallithea to Zefiros, uprooted trees and broke several branches, while several boats were smashed in Nea Marina.

The Fire Department was working to remove debris.

Hellenic Air Force training jet crashes near Kalamata airbase

A search-and-rescue operation was initiated on Wednesday following the crash of a Hellenic Air Force T-2 Buckeye training jet near the Kalamata airbase in the Peloponnese. The pilot's condition is currently unknown.

Reports suggest that an explosion was heard before the crash.

Missing livestock farmer found dead, storm death toll rises to four

A 49-year-old livestock farmer from central Greece who had gone missing since Wednesday amid a severe storm was found dead shortly before noon on Thursday by rescuers, the Fire Department said.

The man was found in a stream that had become inaccessible by rocks and branches carried by the torrential rain.

Country at the mercy of the wind

Strong winds continued to fan Greece's fiery nightmare on Wednesday as firefighters, including foreign contingents, battled blazes around the country and on the outskirts of the capital that have already claimed 20 lives.

The dispersion of firefighting forces to deal with multiple fronts was confirmed by Civil Protection Minister Vassilis Kikilias.
