KEDE posts forms for feeding of strays

Greece's Union of Municipalities and Communities (KEDE) has posted on its website and Facebook page a form required by those who want to leave their house to feed strays.

The form needs to be signed by the municipality where the person lives and should be brought along when the carer goes to feed the animals, KEDE said.

Gov't urged to improve accessibility for disabled

The president of Greece's Union of Municipalities and Communities (KEDE), Giorgos Patoulis, has urged the government to improve accessibility for disabled people.

He issued the plea in the wake of report on Monday that a man in a wheelchair was forced to travel in the enclosed car deck of a ship because there was no accessibility to the passenger areas.

West Nile virus claims 2 lives

Health officials have confirmed two West Nile virus-related deaths. Both victims were octogenarian residents of western Attica.

Since the start of the summer season, 55 cases of the mosquito-borne virus have been reported in Greece by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (KEELPNO).

Heavy rainfall aggravates trash problems in Athens

Heavy rainfall in the past few days has aggravated the capital's already dire trash problem, as structural damage to Attica's main landfill has caused waste to pile up in the streets of Athens.

The rain triggered streams of trash to flow through the streets of Athens and washed large tangles of waste into storm drains. Local residents complained of smell and pollution.

Patoulis says will run for Athens mayor

Giorgos Patoulis, who is president of Greece's Union of Municipalities and Communities (KEDE), on Friday said he will run for mayor of Athens in the next local elections.

Speaking to local media, Patoulis, who is also mayor of Maroussi north of Athens, said he did not seek to be endorsed by political parties, but to attract "the support of the people."
