Turkish national with Europol warrant arrested on Greek island

A Turkish national was arrested by Greek police on the island of Kalymnos, Monday afternoon on a series of charges. The 38-year-old man, who had a pending Europol arrest warrant in Germany, is charged with fraud, theft and embezzelment. After searching his home in the presence of a judge, authorities discovered and confiscated small amounts of unprocessed cannabis.

Fire service workers take to streets of Athens

Members of the Greek fire service took part in a demonstration in central Athens Friday, demanding new hirings and better working conditions. "We do not have the luxury of sitting back and watching a gloomy future stretch out before us," the union representing Greek fire service workers said in a statement, bemoaning the impact of austerity on livelihoods.

Russian diplomat found dead in Athens

A Russian diplomat by the name of Andrey Malanin was found dead in Athens on Monday. The 54-year-old man was found by some of his aides at his residence on 7 Atticou street. According to reports he did not show up in his office Monday morning, while he had not contacted anybody, which prompted his associates to search for him.

Police dismantle gang behind armed robberies

The Greek Police said it has unraveled a gang that had carried out at least 20 violent armed robberies at supermarkets.

Officers have arrested two men, aged 37 and 57, while another two suspected members, both 34, are already serving a prison sentence after being apprehended last June.

Two more suspects, aged 37 and 55, were arrested last week.

Roupa, 25-year-old woman charged with running new terror group

An Athens prosecutor yesterday brought charges against Panagiota Roupa, a leading member of the Revolutionary Struggle guerrilla group, and a 25-year-old woman, of running a new terrorist organization.

Roupa and the woman were arrested early on Thursday in separate raids in two different suburbs of Athens following months of police surveillance.
