Writer explores Athens’ pre-war bomb shelters

General Ioannis Metaxas' regime (1936-41) built some 400 bomb shelters in Athens, while it imposed by law the creation of a shelter in every new building, raising the number to 5,500 from 1936 to 1940, author and researcher Konstantinos Kyrimis, who has been recording them for over a decade, tells Kathimerini, citing an official Hellenic Army report.

Military service extended by three months

Defense Minister Nikos Panagiotopoulos Thursday announced that the length of compulsory military service for those serving in the Hellenic Army was being extended to 12 months from nine months today.

The decision was reached during a meeting Thursday of the Council for Foreign Affairs and Defense (KYSEA) that was chaired by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

Konstantinos Floros becomes new head of Greek Armed Forces

Lieutenant General Konstantinos Floros was Friday appointed as chief of the Hellenic Armed Forces following a session of the Council for Foreign Affairs and Defense (KYSEA) headed by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
Floros, who previously held the post of commanding general of the Hellenic First Army, replaces Christos Christodoulou who is retiring.

Hand grenade found near Menidi school

A hand grenade found in Menidi, northern Athens, on Saturday was removed from the area by officers of the Hellenic Army's specialist bomb disposal unit while police launched an investigation into its provenance.
The grenade was found on the corner of Liosion and Aristotelous streets, near a primary school, police said.
It was to be examined by forensic experts.
