Shutdown decision for two casinos
The Hellenic Gaming Commission (EEEP) shut down the Rio and Alexandroupoli casinos for the next two months on Thursday due to debts to the Single Social Security Entity (EFKA).
According to EFKA's report, the Rio casino had overdue contributions arrears that topped 25 million euros, while the Alexandroupoli casino owed 12.5 million euros.

A countdown of 10 working days started late on Monday, until February 3, for the submission of any objections about the tender for the casino permit at the Elliniko plot, after the notification by the Hellenic Gaming Commission (EEEP) to the two candidates regarding the bids submitted.

The Hellenic Gaming Commission (EEEP) has unanimously accepted the conclusions of the committee for the tender of the Elliniko casino concerning the rejection of the bid by Hard Rock International (HRI).
Reliable sources say the decision was made at last Friday's EEEP board meeting. This decision rules HRI out of the running for the casino license at the old Athens airport plot.

Punters gambled over 16 billion euros in 2018
Greek punters staked over 16 billion euros on legal games of chance last year.
According to figures compiled by the Hellenic Gaming Commission (EEEP), Greeks bet 13.2 billion on all legal games to leave gross gaming revenues of 2.1 billion euros to the suppliers, while at least another 3 billion euros was gambled on video lottery terminals (VLTs), which EEEP has not accounted for.

Casino revenues have nosedived since 2008
The total amount of money spent by punters at Greece's casinos last year came to 1.58 billion euros, almost half of the 3.18 billion euros shelled down in 2008, according to data published by the Hellenic Gaming Commission (HGC), the body supervising the sector and responsible for granting new casino operating licenses.
