Hotels only garner small part of growth in February tourist arrivals

February offered a 1.2% annual increase in tourist arrivals in hotel accommodation, rental rooms and camping and a 1.6% growth compared to the corresponding month last year, according to provisional data by the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) released on Tuesday.

In February 2024, arrivals at tourist accommodation amounted to 773,104 and overnight stays to 1,677,685.

Inflation climbed to 3.2% in March

The national inflation rate in Greece amounted to 3.2% in March climbing from 2.9% in February, the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) reported on Wednesday.

ELSTAT's data confirm the rising inflation picture shown by Eurostat's statistics, according to which European Union-harmonized inflation rose in Greece to 3.4% in March, from 3.1% in February.

Unemployment keeps declining

The Greek unemployment rate fell to 11% of the workforce in February 2024 against 11.2% in February 2023, the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) said on Monday.

The number of unemployed people totaled 524,428, down 0.1% from February 2023.

Homeownership in Greece declined 11.3% in 2005-21

A new economic reality has emerged in the Greek housing market amid the prolonged financial crisis, with a notable portion of the nation's residential inventory now under the ownership of institutional or foreign investors. This trend is underscored by statistical data, revealing an 11.3% decline in homeownership rates from 2005 to 2021.

Industrial turnover index shows 3.2% increase in January

The Overall Turnover Index in Industry rose 3.2% in January 2024 compared with the corresponding index of January 2023, according to the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT).

The Overall Turnover Index in Industry in January 2023 increased by 19.8% compared with the corresponding index in January 2022, ELSTAT said on Wednesday. 

Accommodation revenues rise almost 12% in January

Turnover in Greece's businesses that provide accommodation showed an 11.9% growth year-on-year in January, amounting to 94,097,348 euros, compared to €84,061,799 in January 2023, according to the Hellenic Statistical Authority.

This is likely the effect of the expansion of the Greek tourism season, as the country aspires to become a 12-month destination.
