Detained journalist Hüsnü Mahalli taken to hospital in Istanbul

Journalist Hüsnü Mahalli, who was detained on Dec. 13 for allegedly insulting state officials on Twitter, was hospitalized on Dec. 14, Doğan News Agency has reported.

Mahalli was transferred to Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine Hospital when he felt unwell in the evening hours during his proceedings at the police headquarters.

Journalist Hüsnü Mahalli was detained on Dec. 13 for allegedly insulting state officials on Twitter, as a part of an investigation carried out by the Istanbul chief public prosecutor's office, Doğan News Agency has reported.

Police detained Mahalli at his home in the evening hours and took him to police headquarters. Digital equipment at his home was also seized for investigation.

Fifty-one academics out of 87 who were issued detention warrants have been detained by police at Istanbul University over suspected links to U.S.-based Islamic preacher Fethullah Gülen, accused of orchestrating the July 15 failed coup attempt, state-run Anadolu Agency has reported.

Turkish prosecutors on Dec. 9 ordered the detention of 87 people linked to Istanbul University as part of an ongoing operation targeting the Gülen movement, accused by Ankara of being behind the July 15 failed coup attempt, state-run Anadolu Agency has reported.

Protests Against Post-Coup Purge in Turkey

Several hundred students, scientists and syndicate members protested in Turkey on Thursday against the purge undertaken by the authorities after the coup attempt in July, reported Reuters.

Some of the banners of the protesters who gathered in front of Istanbul University read: "Shoulder to Shoulder against Fascism", "Resistance Will Win".
