Cafe at birdwatching tower stirs debate
A café launched under a birdwatching tower in the Sarıyer district of Istanbul has triggered a dispute between birdwatchers and the officials.
"We feel like outsiders now, we cannot do birdwatching here anymore," said the birdwatchers.

False killer whales spotted in Aegean Sea first time in decades
False killer whales, generally found in tropical and temperate waters of major oceans, have been spotted in northern Aegean Sea for the first time in 25 years.
Eight false killer whales floating in open sea some 6 miles away from Imbros island were recorded by a fisherman.
Sait Faik Abasıyanık: Turkey's first modern author
Turkey on May 11 commemorated Sait Faik Abasıyanık, a pioneer in modern Turkish literature, on the 66th anniversary of his death.
Abasıyanık was born on Nov. 18, 1906 in northwestern Sakarya province to businessman Mehmet Faik and Makbule Hanım.

Haldun Taner: Pioneer of Turkish cabaret theater
Turkey on May 7 remembered Haldun Taner, pioneer of Turkish cabaret theater, on his 34th death anniversary.
Taner, also a renowned playwright and short story writer, was born on May 16, 1915, in Istanbul to a family of bureaucrat Ahmet Selahattin Bey and Seza Hanım.

Turkish doctor succumbs to coronavirus
A Turkish doctor has died after contracting coronavirus from his patient.
Dr. Cemil Taşçıoğlu, who succumbed to the disease on April 1, was a professor of Internal Medicine at Istanbul University.
Speaking to Anadolu Agency, professor Dr. Tufan Tükek, dean of Istanbul University, said Taşçıoğlu had tested positive for the virus and was being treated since March 16.

Turks spend almost three hours every day on social media
Turks spend on average some two hours and 48 minutes on social media on a daily basis, while the time they remain glued to the tube is two hours and 44 minutes, according to a study jointly carried out by the Association for Mobile Communication Devices and Information Technologies Businessmen (MOBİSAD) and Istanbul University.
Özdemir Asaf: A gentle poet
Turkey on Jan. 28 commemorated Özdemir Asaf, a unique poet of contemporary Turkish literature, on the 39th anniversary of his death.
Born in Ankara, the Turkish capital, on June 11, 1923, Asaf was known to be a man with gentle characteristics and love for life.

Evacuation of university buildings start after earthquake
Istanbul University's Cerrahpaşa Rectorate has announced that some of the university's buildings, including the pediatric care unit, the dentistry faculty and the faculty of health sciences, will be evacuated until Oct. 6 due to damages incurred by the 5.8-magnitude earthquake on Sept. 26.
