AKP reveals mayoral candidates for Istanbul districts

President and Justice and Development Party (AKP) leader Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has unveiled his ruling party's list of mayoral candidates for Istanbul's districts in the upcoming local elections scheduled for March 31.

The announcement came during a meeting at the Haliç Congress Center on Jan. 20, where the candidates representing the AKP-led People's Alliance were introduced.

Defense, foreign ministers to brief parliament on PKK attacks

Defense Minister Yaşar Güler and Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan are set to provide briefings to the parliamentary plenary tomorrow on the weekend's deadly PKK attacks in northern Iraq as the parliament reconvenes following a two-week hiatus marked by budget talks.

The parliamentary session, scheduled to commence at 3 p.m., will be presided over by Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş.

AKP to unveil initial slate of candidates for local polls Sunday

The ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) is set to unveil its first batch of candidates for the upcoming local elections on Jan. 7, spokesperson Ömer Çelik has revealed.

The remaining candidates will be officially announced on Jan. 15, along with the election manifesto, Çelik told a group of journalists at the party headquarters in the capital Ankara late on Jan. 3.

Parliament’s foreign affairs committee approves Sweden's NATO bid

The Turkish Parliament's foreign affairs committee on Tuesday gave the green light for Sweden's NATO membership.

Following the approval at the committee on Dec. 26, the protocol will now be submitted to the general assembly for a vote. Simple majority of the 600 lawmakers will suffice for the ratification of the bid.
