Multi-millionaire former banker Malcolm Turnbull was sworn in as prime minister of Australia on Sept.15, just hours after masterminding a coup against conservative leader Tony Abbott, and pledging a new style of leadership.

Australian conservative Prime Minister Tony Abbott was dramatically ousted Sept. 14 in a snap party vote forced by challenger Malcolm Turnbull, a millionaire former banker who will become the nation's new leader.

Prime Minister Victor Ponta on Sunday said he was standing down as leader of the ruling Social Democrat Party, PSD, until prosecutors have completed a criminal investigation into charges facing him.

The Vice President of the Greek Parliament and SYRIZA MP, Alexis Mitropoulos warned the party was mutating into a neo-liberal party and was being forced to implement a suffocating and anti-social platform. Speaking before the party’s meeting Friday, Mitropoulos did not hold back, as he unleashed harsh criticism against the government.

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott July 2 brushed off mounting pressure for a parliamentary vote on same-sex marriage from within his conservative coalition, saying he was more focused on the economy and security.

The Liberal Reforming Party (PLR) and the Conservative Party (PC) have completed their merger negotiations, PLR Chair and Senate Speaker Calin Popescu-Tariceanu announced on Thursday. The new liberal party will be called the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats (ALDE), he mentioned.

Senate Chairman Calin Popescu-Tariceanu told a plenary debate in Parliament on a motion of censure against the Ponta Government that the National Liberal Party (PNL) has no right to talk about legitimacy, adding that it is for the first time in the history of PNL when its national leader was appointed instead of elected to office.
