Migrants tried on Thursday to break into Macedonia from Greece, defying the tougher border restrictions imposed by the Macedonian authorities last week, newswires reported.

In a report released on Monday, Human Rights Watch accused the Macedonian police of beating and insulting refugees and migrants from countries like Syria, Afghanistan and Somalia.

"It's plain to see that Macedonia has a problem with police violence against asylum seekers and migrants," said Emina Cerimovic of Human Rights Watch.

Macedonia and Serbia, which both lie on the transit route to the EU, said they were prepared for more arrivals despite Germany's announcement on Sunday that it would be temporarily exiting the Schengen passport-free zone and reintroducing to deal with the large influx of refugees.

Macedonia on Sunday assisted thousands of migrants to resume their journeys through the country and into Serbia after the authorities tried to seal their southern border last Thursday and declared a crisis situation, which resulted in chaotic scenes and clashes with police.

About 2,000 migrants have entered Serbia on Sunday morning after crossing from Macedonia, Tanjug reported.

Thousands of rain-soaked migrants, including many women and children, were trapped on Aug. 22 on the border between Greece and Macedonia, as Macedonian police blocked them from entering the country and heading north toward the European Union.
                   

Two trains have left for Serbia before noon as Macedonian police are now letting through bigger groups of people. Another 1000 remain stranded in no man's land between Greece and Macedonia, since Macedonia declared crisis and deployed troops at the border on Thursday.

The United Nations refugee agency expressed concern on Friday over the increasingly precarious situation at the border between Greece and Macedonia, where Macedonian police used force earlier to prevent migrants trying to cross.
