Star soprano sues Met Opera

Soprano Anna Netrebko, once among the Metropolitan Opera's biggest box office draws, sued the company and general manager Peter Gelb on Aug. 4, alleging defamation, breach of contract and other violations related to the institution's decision to drop her following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Homage to Maria Callas with a grand ‘Medea’

In a tribute marking the centennial of Maria Callas' birth, the Greek National Opera is premiering Luigi Cherubini's "Medea" on Tuesday. This major international co-production involves three leading North American opera houses: the Metropolitan Opera in New York City, the Canadian Opera Company and the Lyric Opera of Chicago.

Athens to open Maria Callas museum in 2023: city

A new museum honoring legendary soprano Maria Callas will open in Athens next year to honor the centenary of her birth, the city said on Oct. 26.

The museum, to open in the summer of 2023, will feature "valuable historical archives, rare live recordings, a unique collection of records and personal items" of Callas, said a statement.

The Athens and Thessaloniki concert halls will be broadcasting the Metropolitan Opera's production of Giuseppe Verdi's "Aida" live at 7.55 p.m. sharp on Saturday, October 6. In this monumental production directed by Sonja Frisell, soprano Anna Netrebko sings her first Met Aida, with mezzo-soprano Anita Rachvelishvili as Amneris and Aleksandrs Antonenko as the warrior Radames.
