Minor reshuffle to rectify weaknesses

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Wednesday made targeted interventions in the composition of his government to enhance, as a senior official said, "its effectiveness."

More specifically, the decision to replace the political leadership of the Ministry of Citizen Protection, both minister and deputy minister, were made to bolster the conservative administration's security agenda.

Inherent flaws lie behind police fiasco

The government is reportedly intent on moving forward with institutional changes and replacing individuals within the Greek police (ELAS) after the latest debacle last Monday night and the force's failure to deal with a moderate-risk operation, like the interception of 100-120 Croatian hooligans. The fiasco has been attributed to structural shortcomings and rivalries among senior echelons. 

Citizen Protection Minister Mitarakis resigns

Minister of Citizen Protection Notis Mitarakis has resigned for "personal reasons."

A government briefing confirmed that Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis had accepted his resignation.

The Ministry of Citizen Protection is responsible for the country's public security services, such as the police, fire service and General Secretariat for Civil Protection.

Two arrested in relation to journalist Karaivaz’ murder

Police have made two arrests in relation to the murder of journalist Giorgos Karaivaz in April 2021, Citizen Protection Minister Takis Theodorikakos has announced.

In a Facebook post, Theodorikakos said that "police arrested two people - who were the subject of an arrest warrant - involved in the murder of the deceased journalist."

Greek PM Mitsotakis: Any abuse by a law enforcement officers will be severely punished

Kyriakos Mitsotakis, speaking at an event of the Ministry of Citizen Protection on security and the reduction of crime, at the former Hellenic Police Officers' School, sent a message that no abuse by a law enforcement officer at the expense of a citizen will be tolerated on the occasion of the case of the rape of a 19-year-old woman by police officers inside the Omonia police station.
