Dnevnik analyses per-election developments on the left

Ljubljana – Preparations for the general election are under way on several fronts in Slovenia, the newspaper Dnevnik says on Saturday. While the crème de la crème of the Slovenian centre-right parties are forming an alliance under the wing of the Modern Centre Party (SMC), the question arises what is happening in the left pole.

Opposition tables motion of no confidence in justice and education ministers

Ljubljana – Four centre-left opposition parties have tabled motions of no confidence in Justice Minister Marjan Dikaučič and Education Minister Simona Kustec. The main charge against Dikaučič is the failure to appoint delegated European prosecutors. Kustec has been accused of failings regarding getting schools ready for the new wave of the pandemic.

DeSUS electing new leadership on Saturday

Ljubljana – The Pensioners’ Party (DeSUS) will hold a congress on Saturday to elect what will be its third leadership in a year and a half. Last December, after less than a year under Aleksandra Pivec, the party again elected its ex-boss Karl Erjavec, but he stepped down in March. There are three contenders now.

Marjan Dikaučič appointed new justice minister

Ljubljana – Marjan Dikaučič, an official receiver, has become Slovenia’s new justice minister after the National Assembly voted 44:41 in favour on Tuesday. He succeeds Lilijana Kozlovič, who resigned due to the government’s decision to suspend the appointment of Slovenia’s members of the European Public Prosecutor’s Office.

No parliament debate on opposition Left’s political programme

Ljubljana – Speaker Igor Zorčič will not call a plenary session to debate the opposition Left’s party programme after the coalition Democrats (SDS) and New Slovenia (NSi) requested this last week, arguing the programme contained elements suggesting the Left could act against the country’s constitutional order.
