Moldova Asks UN to Press Russia Over Transnistria

Moldova asked the United Nations on Wednesday to discuss the withdrawal of Russian troops from the separatist region of Transnistria at the upcoming 72nd session of the General Assembly.

The Moldovan Ambassador to the UN, Victor Moraru, forwarded a letter from his government that calls the presence of Russian troops in Transnistria a threat to international peace and security.

Moldova's President Igor Dodon is facing a backlash from political opponents and civil society activists after announcing that he intends to accompany Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin to the breakaway region of Transnistria and decorate Russian peacekeepers on the 25th anniversary of their deployment later this week.
