President Klaus Iohannis stated, on Tuesday, that in 2020 the Ministry of National Defence (MApN) will have to focus on consolidating the strategic profile of Romania in NATO and the EU, accelerating the process of developing the operational capacity of the Army, as well as initiating and running endowment programs.

President Klaus Iohannis stated on Friday that, in the context in which the regional and global security environment is continuously changing, Romania needs a strong and well prepared Army, able to continue with its contribution to the security and stability of the area and to meet its commitments with NATO, and also to help with the implementation of the EU Common Defence and Security Policy.

NATO has asked to establish a counterintelligence centre in Bucharest to act against "reported threats" and to support alliance structures in the country against espionage and sabotage by hostile forces.
