In a series of thunderstorms over the city and surrounding areas on Thursday afternoon, a large amount of rain fell that the drainage system could not manage, the National Meteorological Service (NWS) announced.

Greece blanketed by heaviest snowfall in 12 years

The heaviest snowfall to hit Greece in 12 years triggered power cuts, disrupted transport and trapped people in their homes on Monday.

A cold front swept across the country from Saturday, driving temperatures down to -20 degrees Celsius (-4 degrees Fahrenheit) in northern Greece and causing rare snowfall in Athens after a period of unseasonably warm weather.

Torrential rain gridlocks Athens roads, hail damages crops

A storm flooded streets and created bottlenecks in main roads of the Greek capital, while other regions reported damages from hailstorms as a wet weather front swept across the country on Thursday.

The torrential rain gridlocked Ardittou and Vassileos Konstantinou Streets, as well as Kifissou, Kifissias and Mesogeion Avenues.

Weather to take turn for the worse

The National Meteorological Service (EMY) on Monday warned of a storm front that is expected to hit parts of the country from Tuesday through Thursday afternoon.

According to EMY, the wet front will bring strong storms and hail, starting with Crete and possibly parts of the Peloponnese on Tuesday, Evia on Tuesday night and the islands of the Western Cyclades on Wednesday.
