Authorities issue cellphone alerts to residents of Karditsa, Farsala

Authorities have issued cellphone alerts to residents of Karditsa and Farsala in central Greece, advising them to remain indoors due to hazardous weather conditions.

The Fire Brigade's Operations Center received 1,196 calls from Tuesday morning until Wednesday at 6 a.m. for assistance with tasks such as water pumping, tree removal, and evacuating people to safety.

The National Meteorological Service (EMY) warned of a significant drop in temperature, thunderstorms, hail, and strong winds across Greece starting this Monday until Wednesday.

Heatwave to continue next week, some respite as of Thursday

The National Meteorological Service (EMY) said in an updated emergency weather report on Sunday said that the heatwave will continue mostly unabated until Thursday, when it will post a moderate decline.

Sunday's thermal surge prevailed throughout the country with temperatures reaching up to 45 degrees Celsius in Thessaly, central Greece.

Heatwave to peak again this weekend

After average temperatures of 36.3 and a high of 42.6 degrees Celsius recorded by the country's weather stations on Friday, the mercury is expected to rise again slightly over the weekend and to reach 45C in places.

The country is facing a prolonged heat wave, one "worse than that of 1987," according to Antonis Lalos, director of the National Meteorological Service (NMS).
