Health authorities in the western port of Patra on Thursday sought to assure the public that a small cluster of meningitis cases at the city's university is being dealt with and should not put off revelers hoping to join the country's biggest Carnival festivities this weekend.

A second hospital death in a week is being attributed to a very invasive form of streptococcal disease that infects the respiratory tract.

According to reports on Tuesday, the bacteria has been confirmed as the cause of death of a 28-year-old man in Thessaloniki, northern Greece, last week.

New SARS-CoV-2 infections in Greece rose to 543 on Monday from 484 on Sunday, bringing the total number of infections since the start of the pandemic to 157,495.

Almost half of the new cases (265) were confirmed in Attica.

Just a few days before the government opens its mass vaccination program against Covid-19 to the general population, authorities are concerned about tens of thousands of people whose social characteristics could prevent them from getting the jab.

New coronavirus infections in Greece fell to 671 on Wednesday from 866 on Tuesday, bringing the total number of infections since the start of the pandemic to 146,688.

Coronavirus infections in Greece seemed resistant to the continuing restrictive measures with 866 new cases announced by health authorities on Tuesday, compared with 444 on Monday.

The National Organization of Public Health (EODY) said the total number of infections since the start of the pandemic was 146,020.
