Greek heavyweights say cannot work together in government
Greece's two dominant politicians on Sept.14 ruled out working with each other in a coalition, casting doubt on whether a stable government will emerge from an election that polls indicate neither of them can win outright.

All eyes were on the Greek political leader’s debate that took place on Monday, ahead of the snap elections set for September 20. With polls showing that neither of the two rivals are likely to secure a majority, both Radical Left Coalition (SYRIZA) leader Alexis Tsipras and conservative main opposition New Democracy party head Vangelis Meimarakis wary of alienating voters.

Main opposition New Democracy Party leader Vangelis Meimarakis is holding a press conference at the Ioannis Vellidis Center in Thessaloniki.
“In 2012 we could have communicated and worked together to leave behind all that separated us so that the country could get out of its predicament,” he said.

Latest poll: SYRIZA ahead of ND by 1 percentage point
The latest opinion poll published this week gives previously ruling SYRIZA the support of 26 percent of respondents to 25 percent for rival New Democracy party, signaling a prospective “derby” for first-place.
The opinion poll was conducted by the Pulse firm and commissioned by the Athens television station Action24.

One of the first opinion poll to see the light of day since snap elections appeared as a more-or-less given gives ruling SYRIZA a lead of two percentage points over main opposition New Democracy party, 24 percent to 22 percent.
The poll was conducted for the firm Interview and commissioned by the provincial television channel Vergina.
