Greek leaders condemn London attack

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has expressed his abhorrence of the terror strike in London on Saturday in which seven people were killed and 48 injured, and pledged Greece's allegiance to the people of the United Kingdom.

In a tweet on Sunday, Tsipras said the attacks caused sadness and anger, and that "we must beat terrorism and fear with determination and solidarity."

Gov't to change electoral law in local authority power bid

Alexis Tsipras confirmed on Thursday his government's intention to increase its influence at the local authority level by announcing a change in the election system of the 2019 municipal elections.

"We are open to dialogue but we are determined to enforce the simple proportional system," Tsipras said, adding that in this way "we are changing the way municipal authorities operate."

Greek politicians reacted on Monday to the death of Constantine Mitsotakis, former prime minister and president of New Democracy, by offering condolences and expressing their feelings about his legacy and demise.

"A great [man] has gone. Greece would be a better country today if it had paid more attention to him," New Democracy vice president Adonis Georgiadis tweeted.

Former Greek Prime Minister Constantine Mitsotakis, one of Greece's most prominent veteran politicians, died early on Monday, his family said. He was 98.

He was "surrounded by people whom he loved and loved him" when he passed away, his family said in a brief statement carried by the semi-official Athens News Agency.
