New Slovenia

Ljubljana, 23 October – Partial results after nearly 60% of votes counted put former Democrats (SDS) foreign minister Anže Logar and lawyer Nataša Pirc Musar in the second round of the presidential election. The former netted some 34% and the latter 27%.

Ljubljana – The opposition New Slovenia will use all legal means available to oppose the Constitutional Court’s recent decision to allow gay couples to get married and adopt children and its ramifications, including any changes to the family code that will be based in this ruling, the party’s deputy group leader Janez Cigler Kralj said on Wednesday.

Ljubljana/Medvode – Manfred Weber, chair of the European People’s Party (EPP) in the European Parliament, endorsed the Democrats (SDS) and New Slovenia (NSi) as he came to Slovenia on Tuesday, just days before the official end of the campaign for Sunday’s general election.

Janša's coalition comprises his own right-wing Slovenian Democratic Party, SDS, the right-wing New Slovenia, NSi, joined by the once moderate Modern Centre Party, SMC, now renamed Konkretno after its merger with a minor business-oriented Economic Activity Party, GAS.

Vital role of smaller parties in Slovenia

Ljubljana – New Slovenia (NSi) met for a virtual congress on Saturday in preparation for next year’s general election where their leader Matej Tonin said this Christian democratic party should get the mandate to form a government in order to avoid the “inefficiency” of the centre-left and the “sharpness” of the senior partner in the current ruling coalition.

Ljubljana – President Borut Pahor has decided to call a general election on the first possible date, 24 April 2022, “but if he expected to calm down the increasingly tense situation in the country, he was very wrong”, the newspaper Večer says in Saturday’s commentary under the headline No Reprieve.

Ljubljana – New Slovenia – the Christian Democrats (NSi) remembered on Monday Andrej Bajuk, the party’s founder and first leader, who died aged 67 ten years to the day. NSi leader Matej Tonin recalled Bajuk’s dedication to the party and his homeland.

Brussels – Prime Minister Janez Janša’s appearance in front of the European Parliament’s democracy monitoring group was overshadowed by a row with chair Sophie in ‘t Veld over a video alleging journalists are biased. After In ‘t Veld refused to play the video during the time allotted for his statement, Janša disconnected from the videoconference.

Ljubljana – Matej Tonin, the leader of the Christian democratic party New Slovenia (NSi), argued strong internal democracy in the party as he responded on Friday to scathing criticism expressed by the party’s former leader, MEP Ljudmila Novak.

Ljubljana – The parliamentary Commission for Oversight of Public Finances debated Friday the selection of Slovakia’s Skytoll for an e-tolling system for cars. While the opposition alleged irregularities, motorway company DARS and the Infrastructure Ministry rejected any impropriety. The MPs asked the anti-graft commission to look into the tender.
