President Klaus Iohannis decorated the nine Romanian athletes who have won medals in the Tokyo Olympic Games, during a ceremony that took place, on Wednesday, at the Cotroceni Palace.

Romanian athlete Marco Sovar won the gold medal in the men's sword event on Sunday at the Junior Fencing World Championships in Cairo, after defeating in the finals the South Korean Junseong Park, 15-13. The fencer legitimized at CS Dinamo was led 11-7, but managed to snap back and win, according to the website of the Romanian Fencing Federation.

Epee fencer Ana Maria Popescu, gold medalist at the 2016 Olympic Games with the team, became the 60th Romanian athlete qualified for the Tokyo Olympics, announced on Tuesday evening the Romanian Fencing Federation and the Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee. Ana-Maria secured her place to Tokyo after finishing first in the world ranking of the event, the federation said.

President of the Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee (COSR) Mihai Covaliu said on Wednesday that former world number one tennis player Simona Halep will be recommended to be Romania's flag bearer at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, with the final decision to be made by COSR Executive Committee. "Simona Halep is said to be one of Romania's most iconic athletes.

The President of the Romanian Olympic and Sporting Committee (COSR), Mihai Covaliu, declared on the occasion of the 130th anniversary since the establishment of AGERPRES that he further expects the National News Agency to be there for the performances of the Romanian athletes at major international competitions.

French team Bourg la Reine defeated Romanian CSA Steaua to win the women's foil European Cup in Bucharest on Sunday evening, the Romanian Fencing Federation informed.

The Women's Foil European Cup competition will take place in Bucharest on Sunday, April 19, at the ''Mihai Viteazul" Sports Hall, with the participation of six teams, including CSA Steaua Bucharest and CSU Poli Timisoara.

Romanian Malina Calugareanu climbed to the top spot of the World Cup of Junior Women's Foil thanks to the good showing in the legs hosted by Timisoara (1st place), Guatemala (1), Bochum (37) and Bratislava (9), the Romanian Fencing Federation announced on Thursday.

Romanian Ana-Maria Branza won the women's title and Italian Edoardo Munzone the men's in the fourth edition of the Alfredo Bachelli individual epee trophy gathering 100 athletes in the Sports Hall of Craiova (southern Romania) on Saturday, the Romanian Fencing Federation announced.
