Romanian TV Chief Faces Axe From MPs

Romania's parliament is expected to give a negative verdict on Wednesday on TV Romania's activity report for last year, in which case the leadership of TVR will have to quit.

Stelian Tanase, 63, director of the state-owned television company, started his job on a mission to reform the cash-strapped firm, but it now likely to have to resign long his mandate ends.

Romania MPs Agree to Cut VAT to 20% Next Year, 19% in 2017

Members of Romania's parliament across parties agreed on Thursday to cut Value Added Tax (VAT) to 20% from next year, and to 19% from 2017.

VAT in Romania currently stands at 24%.

Aside from the tax cuts, the government led by Prime Minister Victor Ponta also plans to increase considerably the wages in the public sector from 2016.

Romania's Ponta Vows to Survive Confidence Vote

Romania's parliament on Friday is to debate a no-confidence motion against the centre-left government of Victor Ponta, but its chances of success are seen as low.

The motion tabled by the opposition National Liberal Party, PNL, accuses Ponta and his Social Democratic Party of refusing to introduce postal votes for Romanians living abroad, amongst other things.

Romanian MEP Cristian Preda has said he asked the European Parliament in Strasbourg to discuss the ongoing political crisis in Romania, arguing that because of what he calls a democratic deficit in Romania's Parliament, a hearing of Prime Minister Ponta is needed.
