Portugal's Antonio Guterres To Be New UN Secretary General
The UN Security Council has reached an agreement and Antonio Guterres is to become the new UN Secretary General, announced the Russian Ambassador to the UN Vitaly Churkin.
Guterres is the absolute favourite for Secretary General of the UN after receiving 13 "support" votes, 2 countries voted "no opinion", i.e. no country imposed a veto.
UN Secretary-General Race Enters Final Stretch
Ambassadors on the 15-member UN Security Council will hold their sixth and last informal straw poll on Wednesday, with the five permanent members using coloured ballots to mark candidates they would like to block.

Bulgaria's nominee for Secretary General of the UN, Irina Bokova, remained 6th after the straw poll of the Security Council on Monday.
Bokova received a result of 6 (encourage) -7 (discourage) -3 (no opinion)by the 15 members of the Security Council.
The Portuguese candidate Antonio Guterres ranked 1st again with a score of 12-2-1.
UN Top Job: 'Decisive' Straw Poll to Be Held on Monday
The United Nations Security Council is set to conduct an informal vote on Monday, September 26, that is thought to be decisive in the race for the next UN Secretary General.
The ambassadors of 15 countries to the UN (the 15 ones currently in the Security Council) will be able to "encourage", "discourage" or give "no opinion" each one of the nine candidates.
