Belgrade-Backed Party in Kosovo Accused of Dirty Tricks in Election

The head of the Social Democratic Union, SDU, has accused the Belgrade-backed party representing Kosovo Serbs, Srpska Lista, SL, of trying to ensure the election of sympathetic MPs among Kosovo's non-Serb minorities communities.

Duda Balje made the accusation during a debate hosted in Pristina by BIRN Kosovo's Jeta Xharra on Wednesday.

Kosovo with New Government and PM Avdullah Hoti

Kosovo's parliament on Wednesday confirmed in office a new government led by Avdullah Hoti, the deputy leader of the Democratic League of Kosovo, LDK, the junior party in the last government that initiated the no-confidence motion in March that toppled it.

MPs voted in the new government exactly four months after voting in Albin Kurti's Vetevendosje-led government on February 3.

Kosovo May Form Army, Bypassing Serb Veto

Kosovo's President is planning to establish a regular army for the country by amending the current Law on the Kosovo Security Force, KSF, extending its powers and responsibilities.

A change to the competencies of the existing KSF would circumvent the need to win Kosovo Serb MPs' approval for the formation of a regular army.

Serb Census in Northern Kosovo Faces Obstacles

The chair of the Kosovo parliament's Commission for Public Administration, Zenun Pajaziti, told BIRN that his commission had approved a draft document for a census to be held in northern Kosovo, which now has to be put on the parliamentary agenda.

The census in the four northern municipalities was planned for this autumn, the Deputy Minister of Local Government, Bajram Gecaj, added.
