Ljubljana – The Slovenian Foreign Ministry summoned on Monday the Iranian ambassador to Slovenia over Prime Minister Janez Janša’s recent statement about a 1988 massacre in Iran, explaining that Slovenia always advocates human rights and fundamental freedoms.

Ljubljana – The first countries recognised newly-independent Slovenia soon after it left Yugoslavia in June 1991, but most of them were brand new independent states themselves. A major wave followed in December and in January 1992, when Slovenia was also recognised by Germany, the Vatican and the EU’s predecessor – the European Community.

Tirana – The foreign ministers of Slovenia, Austria and the Czech Republic, Anže Logar, Alexander Schallenberg and Jakub Kulhanek, stressed the role of EU enlargement to the Western Balkans as they met senior Albanian officials in Tirana on Sunday, a day after visiting neighbouring North Macedonia.

Berlin – German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas pledged Germany’s support to Slovenia during its presidency to the EU Council ahead of his meeting with Slovenia’s Anže Logar in Berlin on Wednesday. He highlighted the importance of the EU’s enlargement to the Western Balkans and the rule of law. Logar thanked him for the support.

Bratislava – The foreign ministers of the Central 5, including Slovenia’s Anže Logar, discussed on Thursday possible relaxation of Covid-19 border restrictions during the summer season. They agreed that coordinating and informing each other about measures was necessary so that movement of people and business is not excessively restricted.

Ljubljana – Foreign Ministry State Secretary Stanislav Raščan pledged Slovenia’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in line with the EU’s commitment to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, as he took part in a virtual EU-Brazil event on climate change, biodiversity and sustainable development on Wednesday.

Ljubljana/London – President Borut Pahor and Prime Minister Janez Janša expressed their condolences following the death of Prince Philip on Twitter on Friday after Buckingham Palace announced Queen Elizabeth II’s husband died aged 99 this morning. The Slovenian Foreign Ministry and the country’s embassy in London have also expressed condolences.

Brussels – As EU foreign ministers reached a political agreement on Monday to introduce sanctions against the persons responsible for the arrest and prison sentencing of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, Slovenia’s Anže Logar pointed to the need for the EU to be united in its attitude towards Russia.

Vienna – Foreign Minister Anže Logar was on a working visit to Austria to meet his counterpart Alexander Schallenberg. The pair assessed the countries’ relations in the past year as positive and noted the importance of the 100th anniversary of the Carinthian plebiscite in presence of both presidents. He also met Slovenian minority representatives.

Ljubljana – President Borut Pahor hosted the annual Culture Day event in Presidential Palace on Monday, receiving this year’s Prešeren Prize and Prešeren Fund Prize recipients. Pahor called for culture of dialogue. Author Feri Lainšček, one of the laureates, meanwhile highlighted the role Slovenian culture played in the country’s independence efforts.
