STA and UKOM sign public service contract for 2022
Ljubljana – Igor Kadunc, the director of the Slovenian Press Agency, and Uroš Urbanija, the head of the Government Communication Office (UKOM), signed on Tuesday a contract on financing the STA’s public service in 2022. The deal maintains a system for the calculation of the relevant fee that is based on the actual amount of content the STA produces.

European Parliament to vote on Slovenia resolution next week
Strasbourg – The European Parliament will take a vote on a resolution on the rule of law and fundamental rights in Slovenia at the plenary session in Strasbourg next Thursday, follows from the agenda endorsed by the parliament’s leadership today. The draft resolution is not available yet as the deadline for its submission has been moved from today to Friday.
STA among recipients of Watchdog Awards for journalism
Ljubljana – The Slovenian Journalists’ Association has announced this year’s recipients of the Watchdog Awards, with the most prestigious ones awarded to Večer journalist Glorija Lorenci and the Slovenian Press Agency. The jury noted that Slovenian journalism had remained responsible, professional and ethical despite a challenging year.
EU Commission to keep monitoring STA situation closely
Brussels – The European Commission said on Tuesday it would keep monitoring closely the situation of the Slovenian Press Agency (STA) following the signing of the contract on the STA public service for the last two months of the year. The Slovenian authorities must ensure that the independence of the agency is fully preserved, it added.
Kadunc takes over as STA acting director
Ljubljana – Igor Kadunc, former director general of the public broadcaster RTV Slovenija, takes over as the acting director at the Slovenian Press Agency (STA) on Sunday. He stressed that ensuring financial stability of the STA would be his priority as a prerequisite for the normal functioning and existence of the agency.

Home Policy Committee votes down motion for snap election
Ljubljana – The parliamentary Home Policy Committee voted down late on Friday evening a motion by the centre-left opposition calling for a snap election. The emergency session, which lasted for more than nine hours, discussed the situation in the country. The government finds the motion to be unwarranted.
Ex-RTV Slovenija boss Igor Kadunc appointed STA acting director
Ljubljana – The supervisory board of the Slovenian Press Agency (STA) appointed on Monday Igor Kadunc, former director general of the public broadcaster RTV Slovenija, the agency’s acting director. Kadunc will take over from outgoing director Bojan Veselinovič on 31 October, while taking over as full-fledged director on 1 January 2022.
Opposition say PM’s tweets shameful, harmful for Slovenia
Ljubljana – The centre-left opposition condemned on Friday PM Janez Janša’s response to the visit of a fact-finding mission of the European Parliament, in particular his tweets. These were labelled as harmful and detrimental to Slovenia’s international image. Matej Tonin, the head of the junior coalition New Slovenia (NSi), urged Janša to apologise.
EP mission concerned about tone of public debate in Slovenia
Ljubljana – A delegation of the European Parliament’s committee on civil liberties, justice and home affairs (LIBE) visiting Slovenia on a fact-finding mission has expressed concern mainly at the tone of public debate, while also calling for the issues of STA funding and European delegated prosecutor appointments to be addressed urgently.
