Slovenia’s industry kept expanding in August

Ljubljana – Slovenia’s industrial output grew by 1.1% in August compared to the month before, expanding by 8.4% year-on-year, fresh data from the Statistics Office shows.

The monthly growth was driven by a 7.2% growth in the electricity, gas and steam supply industry and a 1.2% growth in manufacturing as mining and quarrying contracted by 10.1%.

Surfing the net, more than half run into fake news

Ljubljana – Almost 90% of Slovenians aged 16-74 used the internet regularly in the first quarter of 2021, show data released by the Statistics Office on Thursday. When surfing the net, some 58% of them (912,340 users) encountered fake or dubious information on social media or news portals and 37% of them went on to check the facts.

Electronic communication service revenue down 2% last year

Ljubljana – Revenue from electronic communication services in Slovenia amounted to slightly more than one billion euro last year, or 2% less then in 2019. Users sent fewer SMS and more MMS messages and there were more calls in the home network, while calls to international networks were down. Investments increased by 23%.

Slovenia produced more food waste last year

Ljubljana – The average person in Slovenia threw away 68 kilograms of food last year, one kilogram more than in 2019, of which 40% was still edible. Households and foodstuffs trade generated more food waste, while food production and the catering and food service industries generated less, the Statistics Office data show.

Timber extracted from Slovenian forests down by fifth in 2020

Ljubljana – Around 4.2 million cubic metres of timber was extracted from forests in Slovenia last year, which is 20% less than in 2019. The growing stock was somewhat larger, amounting to 357.2 million m3, the Statistics Office said on Monday.

Out of the total felled timber, 2.4 million m3 was represented by coniferous trees and there was 1.9 million m3 of broad-leaved trees.

Two-thirds of Slovenian households loan-free in 2020

Ljubljana – Just over one out of three Slovenian households (36%) had at least one loan or instalment purchase to repay last year, excluding mortgage on their home, and about half reported making just as much to make ends meet without having to borrow or saving anything, according to a report by the Statistics Office.
