Turkish gov't takes all military appointment rights in sweeping new emergency decree

The government took over all appointment rights in the military with three sweeping new state of emergency decrees issued late on Jan. 6, with the authority for the formation of cadres in the General Staff transferred to Turkey's Defense Ministry. 

Nicaragua's Ortega wins third straight term, with wife

Nicaragua's leftist President Daniel Ortega has won a third straight term, with his wife Rosario Murillo as vice president, results showed Nov. 7, but the opposition and the United States condemned the election.

With 99.8 percent of ballots counted, the 70-year-old former Marxist rebel had 72.5 percent of the vote, the country's Supreme Electoral Council said, AFP reported.

Under the Turkish Constitution, the moment a candidate is elected president he is no longer a parliamentarian and should sever all ties with political parties, as the president ought to be above party politics. Because under the Constitution the prime minister must be a parliamentarian, continuing in the prime ministry after being elected president cannot be on the cards anyway.

Voting in Turkey’s Presidential Election Starts at Bulgarian Border

Border crossing points on the Bulgarian-Turkish border have opened polling stations for Turkey’s presidential elections on August 10.

A total of10 polling stations have been opened, including 8 at Kapikule – Kapitan Andreevo, one at Hamzabeyli – Lesovo and one at Derekyoy – Malko Tarnovo, according to reports of the Bulgarian National Radio.
