Suicide bomber kills 40 at volleyball match in Afghanistan

A suicide bomber killed at least 40 people at a crowded volleyball match in eastern Afghanistan on Nov. 23, a provincial official said.

Mukhles Afghan, spokesman for the governor of Paktika province, said at least 50 more were wounded in the attack in Yahya Khel district, where residents had gathered to watch a tournament final.

Female Afghan MP survives suicide attack, 3 dead

A suicide bomber on Nov. 16 attacked a vehicle convoy carrying Afghan lawmakers  including a prominent female MP, killing three civilians and injuring 22 others, officials said.
      
The blast, in which the attacker detonated an explosives-packed car, left the MPs' vehicles badly damaged on a main road in the west of Kabul, close to the parliament.
      

British forces and US Marines hand over control of last bases in Afghanistan

British forces Oct. 26 handed over formal control of their last base in Afghanistan to Afghan forces, ending combat operations in the country after 13 years which cost hundreds of lives.

The Union Jack was lowered at Camp Bastion in the southern province of Helmand, while the Stars and Stripes came down at the adjacent Camp Leatherneck - the last U.S. Marine base in the country.

Malala Yousafzai Becomes Youngest Bearer of Nobel Peace Prize

Pakistan's Malala Yousafzai and India's Kailash Satyarthi have won the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize.

The Norwegian Committee said on its website they were receiving the prize "for their struggle against the suppression of children and young people and for the right of all children to education".
