As concerns rise about instances of violence and lawlessness at Greek universities, a new study has pointed to hundreds of cases in recent years, more than a quarter of which involve attacks on academics.

Data point to sharp increase in university violence, crime
Instances of violence and lawlessness at 16 Greek universities have sharply increased in recent years, reaching 53 in 2017, according to data compiled by the rector of the University of Macedonia, Achilleas Zapranis.
Fireplaces polluting homes, experts warn
Researchers at Thessaloniki's Aristotle University have warned that excessive use of fireplaces instead of other forms of heating creates dangerous pollution inside homes, saying that microparticles in closed spaces can exceed maximum safety levels set by European authorities within just two or three hours of lighting a fire.

University panel includes judicial, police officials
In the wake of reports of a spike in crime on the grounds of universities and at student accommodation complexes, Education Minister Costas Gavroglou has set up a committee of experts to "study issues relating to academic freedom, peace and lawlessness on university grounds."

The general secretary of the Education Ministry, Yiannis Pantis, died in Athens Tuesday at the age of 60. He had been in an intensive care unit since he suffered a heart attack on May 18.
A professor of ecology at Thessaloniki's Aristotle University, Pantis assumed his post in September 2015 under then Education Minister Nikos Filis.
