UEFA president Alexander Ceferin urged Europe on Wednesday to help eliminate hooliganism, which he called "the cancer of football", days after a man was killed in clashes before a match between AEK Athens and Dinamo Zagreb in Greece.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, in statements on Wednesday, announced that the associations of organized team supporters will close and only one official association will remain open for each team and operate at each soccer club's headquarters.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin will make statements to the press at 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday after the conclusion of their meetings.

Mitsotakis will meet with Ceferin at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday at the Maximos Mansion in Athens, to discuss recent developments in European football.

In the latest bid to combat fan violence, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will meet on Wednesday with Aleksander Ceferin, the president of European soccer's governing body UEFA, in Athens after the deadly hooligan clashes on Monday night on the eve of the Champions League qualifier between AEK Athens and Dinamo Zagreb. 

More than 2,000 officers have been assigned by the leadership of Greece's police force, ELAS, to prevent violence on the sidelines of several soccer games taking place in Athens over the next few days.

A funeral service was held Friday for a Greek soccer fan killed in an attack led by Croatian supporters that has rattled European sporting officials.

The opposition PASOK party has called for the resignation of Citizen Protection Minister Giannis Oikonomou after leaked police documents showed that authorities possessed prior knowledge of Croatian hooligans' intentions to travel to Athens, potentially with the malevolent aim of inciting violence.
