The UN Security Council has postponed a vote on a draft resolution calling for a "sustainable ceasefire" in the Gaza Strip to allow more time to respond to objections from the United States, the Guardian reports.

The vote comes days after the United States of America (US) blocked a previous Security Council resolution that would have called for a "humanitarian ceasefire" in the stricken Palestinian territory.

The Israeli army's offensive in the southern Gaza Strip continues, while the Hamas-run health ministry claims more than 17,700 Palestinians have died. A number of countries, including North Korea, criticized the United States' veto of the UN Security Council resolution on the ceasefire.
