Bulgaria on Election Eve: Political Leaders, Medical Professionals Are Key Election Runners in Major Cities

According to the lists of registered party candidates for the upcoming general election on April 4, the race in Sofia's 25th multi-member constituency and in Plovdiv will be between party leaders, while many candidates in Sofia's 23rd constituency will be doctors of medicine.

Maryia Garbiel Leads GERB’s List for the Upcoming European Elections

Maryia Garbiel, Bulgaria's current European Commissioner, leads GERB's list for the European elections, reports BNT. 

At a forum in the National Palace of Culture on 31st of March, GERB (majority partner in the ruling coalition) announced the list of candidates for the elections for members of the EP.

Union of Democratic Forces Faces Leadership Challenge

Part of the Union of Democratic Forces (UDF) demanded change of leadership of the party and refused joining GERB.

Part of the Union in Sofia published on Facebook a declaration blaming the unsatisfactory result of Traycho Traykov during the presidential elections on a lack of clear support from the leadership of the party, especially from the leader Bozhidar Lukarski.

Bulgaria's Former President Zhelyu Zhelev Dies

Bulgaria's former President Zhelyu Zhelev (1990-1997) has died, the press office of President Rosen Plevneliev announced. 

Zhelev, Bulgaria's first democratically elected President after the fall of the Communist regime, died at the age of 79 on Friday.

He was a co-founder of the right-wing Union of Democratic Forces (UDF).
