Alexander Nanau, the director of "colectiv" (Collective), a documentary shortlisted in two categories of the 93rd Academy Awards, says the nomination is the result of the work of a team that has made a film that can compete with the world's best.

Two stories from the Balkans, told by a Romanian-born man and a Bosnian woman have been put on a shortlist of 15 films in the Best International Feature category for the upcoming Oscars, the US Academy Awards said in a statement on Tuesday evening.

The film "La Gomera," directed by Corneliu Porumboiu, Romania's submission for the US Academy award for best international feature film 2020, will have its North-American debut at the "Masters" section of the 44th edition of the Toronto International Film Festival, which will take place September 5-15.

Greek film editor Giorgos Mavropsaridis, known from his cooperation with filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos, became a member of the US Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, joining 842 new members from 59 countries.
Mavropsaridis was nominated last year for an Oscar for the 2018 period comedy The Favourite and won an Eddie award for the Best edited feature film for the same movie.
