Obama calls for flexibility in Greek reform talks in brief exchange with Varoufakis

US President Barack Obama spoke with Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis on the sidelines of an event at the White House honoring Greece's Independence Day with the former stressing the need for flexibility from all sides in ongoing reform negotiations between Greece and its creditors, according to sources.

Washington urges Athens to ‘fully commit’ to reforms in order to unblock bailout funds

US Treasury Undersecretary for International Affairs Nathan Sheets on Monday has urged the SYRIZA government to “fully commit” to negotiations with institutional creditors in order to conclude reforms necessary to acquire another bailout package.

He made the statement during talks with visiting Greek FinMin Yanis Varoufakis in Washington, according to Reuters.

White House comments on Tsipras - Merkel meeting

Following Monday's meeting between the German Chancellor Angela Merkel and the Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, White House spokesman Josh Earnest stated that "As have done for many years in the past, the US continues to be in close contact with European allies and its partners for economic insecurity in the continent".

Yanis confirms: Uncle Sam says no deal would hurt Greece

Greek FinMin Yanis Varoufakis on Wednesday confirmed that he has indeed received advise on the ongoing Greece-Eurozone showdown from none other than US Treasury Secretary Jacok Lew.

A relevant Tweet appeared on Varoufakis’ personal Twitter account.

Athens will, by all accounts, request a loan agreement “extension” on Thursday from it eurozone creditors.

US Treasury team to visit Athens

A team of US Treasury officials will visit Greece in the coming weeks, the Treasury said Tuesday, as Athens?s new anti-austerity government works to ease terms on its bailout program.

The team, whose mission was not detailed, will be led by Daleep Singh, the Treasury?s deputy assistant secretary for Europe and Eurasia.

US threatens tougher action against Russia over Ukraine

Lew's comments during a visit to Kyiv came one day after EU heads of state threatened to impose further financial measures against Moscow in response to the latest upsurge in violence in Ukraine's nine-month war.
