Climate shocks may increase conflict deaths: IMF

Climate change threatens to exacerbate conflict in fragile nations across the globe and lead to increased deaths, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has said in a report. 

While climate shocks alone may not trigger new unrest, the IMF said, they "significantly worsen conflict, compounding fragility" such as hunger, poverty and displacement.

Nearly one-third of Ukraine's territory has been affected by heavy fighting and is likely to require intensive demining operations, the paper said, adding that more than 67,000 square miles (173,529 square kilometers) are contaminated with unexploded ordnance, according to Slovakia-based research center GLOBSEC.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vui also participated in the conference.
"I thank France and the French Development Agency, as well as the World Bank for the huge funds they allocated for local self-governments in Serbia, which must come up with the best projects in the interest of the citizens," Vui said during his address.

$450 million financing from World Bank

Industry Minister Fatih Kacır also announced that the World Bank is providing $450 million in financing for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the region affected by the February earthquakes.

"The financing will be provided to the SMEs which were damaged in the quakes. But also, the SMEs which suffered revenue losses will be entitled to the financing," he said.
