Accused Istanbul gunman may face 40 life terms

The accused gunman in a 2017 nightclub attack in Istanbul which killed 39 people could face 40 aggravated life sentences.

A court in the Turkish metropolis Istanbul on Jan. 27 indicted Abdulkadir Masharipov, an Uzbek national, on charges of murder and being a member of an armed terrorist group, according to judicial sources.

Authorities have determined that the phone number of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) attacker who killed 39 people in an Istanbul nightclub on Jan. 1 was registered in the cellphone of another ISIL suspect, who appeared for in a trial the first time in the Mediterranean province of Antalya on July 10. 

ISIL militants killed in Ankara were in same 'sleeper cell' as Istanbul nightclub attacker

Two Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) militants who were killed in a police operation on May 21 in Ankara are thought to have been members of the same "sleeper cell" as Uzbek-origin Abdulkadir Masharipov, who killed New Year's Eve revelers at Istanbul's Reina nightclub. 

Court accepts indictment on ISIL attack on Istanbul nightclub

An Istanbul court accepted an indictment on an Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) attack on a famous nightclub at the heart of Istanbul on May 17. 

The Istanbul 27th Heavy Penal Court accepted the indictment into the ISIL attack on the Reina nightclub in Ortaköy, which resulted in the deaths of 39 people, while wounded 79 others.

An arrested Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) suspect was preparing an attack like the attack on the Reina nightclub in Istanbul that killed 39 people and wounded many others, according to the indictment completed on May 9, Doğan News Agency reported on May 10.

Police raid ISIL cell, prevent planned attack in Istanbul

Police detained two Islamic State Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) suspects in a noon raid in Istanbul's Kağıthane district on March 16, as the suspects were allegedly preparing an attack in the city.

The suspects are reportedly from the same ISIL cell as Abdulkadir Masharipov, the militant who attacked the Reina nightclub in Istanbul on New Year's Eve, killing 39 people.
