After twelve years of suffering in the Greek courts, the former President of the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) Andreas Georgiou was vindicated in March by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), which condemned Greece for violating his right to a fair trial (Article 6 of the European Convention on Human Rights).

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) said on Tuesday that Greece had violated the right of Andreas Georgiou, the former head of the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT), to a fair hearing, when a top local court denied his request to refer a legal question concerning his care to the EU Court of Justice.

Another verdict in the judicial saga of former Hellenic Statistical Authority head Andreas Georgiou was handed down by the Council of Appeals Court Judges. He was acquitted, for a third time, of any wrongdoing.

As there has been international condemnation of his repeated persecution, a different decision would once again put into question Greece's institutions.

European Commission reiterates its support for former ELSTAT chief

The European Commission has "full confidence in the reliability and accuracy of data by the statistical authority in Greece under Mr Georgiou's leadership," Commissioner for Employment and Social Affairs Marianne Thyssen told a meeting of European parliament's plenary on Wednesday night.

The European Parliament plenary will on Wednesday hold a debate on the case of Andreas Georgiou, the former head of Greece's statistical service (ELSTAT), and the independence of statistical authorities in the members of the European Union.

The session is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. Greek time.

The case of Greece's former statistics agency chief Andreas Georgiou will go to the Council of Appeals for a third time over accusations he falsified budget data to justify Greece's first international bailout.

The former chief of ELSTAT has already been cleared twice in judgments by the Council of Appeals Court Judges.

Former chief statistician awarded for pursuing 'integrity' in Greek data

Greece's former statistics chief Andreas Georgiou was awarded a special commendation for "upholding of the highest professional standards" in producing the country's statistics and "in the pursuit of integrity of statistical systems," the International Statistical Institute (ISI) said in a press release.
