Antarctica has lost ice equaling the size of Türkiye in the last three years, according to a study by Türkiye's top scientific council's team that conducted research as part of its eighth Antarctic expedition.

A group of Turkish scientists has embarked on the eighth Antarctic expedition from Istanbul.

The team, consisting of a 20-member scientific delegation and three high school students, will first set off for Sao Paulo, Brazil, and reach Antarctica's King George Island after a long journey.

Conducting 18 projects on Horseshoe Island as part of the 7th National Antarctic Science Expedition, Turkish researchers visited science bases belonging to eight different countries on the continent, which hold important clues about the past and future of the earth.

A group of Turkish scientists will travel to Antarctica in the near future to establish a Turkish base for scientific research, the head of the first Turkish polar research center has said, state-run Anadolu Agency reported on Feb. 20.
