UPDATE/Tennis: Simona Halep qualifies for the round of sixteen of WTA tournament in Madrid
Romanian tennis player Simona Halep, world's no. 3, on Tuesday qualified for the round of sixteen of the WTA tournament in Madrid, with total prizes worth 7,021,128 US dollars, after defeating British player Johanna Konta (27, WTA's 41), 7-5, 6-1. Halep (27 of age) sealed her victory in 1 hour and 29 minutes. The two players' score in their direct matches so far is 4-3 for Halep.
Sports Digest: Panathinaikos deducted three points
SOCCER: The Super League disciplinary committee has given PAOK all three points from the abandoned game at Panathinaikos and deduct three points from the Greens' tally in the play-off mini-league and two points from next season's league table. Panathinaikos will also play two home games behind closed doors next season and pay a 41,000-euro fine.

Jankovic defeated by Navarro at US Open
NEW YORK - Serbia's Jelena Jankovic is out of the US Open after a 6-1, 6-4 defeat to Carla Suarez Navarro in the second round of the tournament.
Navarro won after just over an hour of play and is now 4-4 head-to-head against Jankovic.
The Spaniard will next face Elena Vesnina of Russia.

Simona Halep fails to qualify for WTA Rome tournament final
Romanian tennis player Simona Halep, ranked second in the world, has failed to defeat Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro in the next to last stage of the 2,428,490-dollar tournament on Saturday, being defeated by 2-6, 6-3, 7-5.

Jankovic withdraws from Doha tournament
BELGRADE - Serbia's Jelena Jankovic did not make it to the quarterfinal of the WTA tournament in Doha after she withdrew with an injury allowing Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic to move on.
Jankovic could not carry on with the match due to a groin pull, so she retired at the point when Kvitova held the lead 6-3, 2-1.

Sharapova cruises, Ivanovic struggles in Brisbane
Top seeds Maria Sharapova and Ana Ivanovic booked their places in the semi-finals of the Brisbane International in vastly contrasting fashion on Jan. 8.
While world number two Sharapova cruised past Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro 6-1, 6-3, Ivanovic was forced to recover from a horror start before edging Kaia Kanepi 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
