Romania's Justice Minister Catalin Predoiu will be attending an informal meeting of the EU Justice and Home Affairs Council (JHA) in Zagreb, Croatia, on January 23 and 24. According to a press statement released on Thursday by the Ministry of Justice, this is the first meeting of the JHA Council at ministerial level held under the Croatian presidency of the Council of the European Union.

The government adopted at its Friday evening meeting the Justice Ministry's memorandum proposing the abolition of the Section for the Investigation of Criminal Offences in the Judiciary (SIIJ). The adoption of the memorandum does not mean that the government dismantles the SIIJ, but only that it assumes as an official stance Justice Minister Catalin Predoiu's proposition.

The Memorandum on the organisation and functioning of the Special Section for Investigating Magistrates (SIIJ), drafted by the Ministry of Justice, which proposes the very dissolution of the SIIJ, is among the items on the government's Friday evening meeting agenda. The meeting will start at 8.00 pm on Friday evening, with the said Memorandum being among the normative acts to be discussed.

The importance of recovering damages from offenses was one of the topics discussed by Justice Minister Catalin Predoiu with U.S. Ambassador in Bucharest Adrian Zuckerman.

Parliament's committees are continuing today their hearings of the ministers picked for the Orban Government. According to the official timetable, Bogdan Lucian Aurescu, designated to become the new foreign minister, will be heard starting at 13:00hrs by the joint committees on foreign affairs and the Romanian communities abroad.
