Staikouras outlines five-pronged plan to revamp production model, restart the economy

With the government struggling to manage the disastrous economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, Finance Minister Christos Staikouras presented "five axes" of the government's reform programme during an online Economist Conference entitled «200 Years of Economic Survival», a reference to this year's bicentennial of the start of Greece's War of Independence.

Dues moratorium extended

The Finance Ministry has granted another long extension to the tax payment deadline, putting back the suspension that was to last until April 30 by another eight months, to the end of this year, allowing for dues to be paid afterward in 24 or 48 tranches.

Support now comes to €5.9 bln

Finance Minister Christos Staikouras on Monday announced specific measures for the "greater, more immediate and targeted support of households and enterprises" to deal with the growing impact of the pandemic on the economy, raising the fiscal cost over the first quarter of the year to 5.9 billion euros, above the budget estimate that had earmarked €7.5 billion for that purpose for the entire ye

Extra burden of €200 mln per month

The new restrictions announced on Friday are estimated to carry an additional fiscal cost of 200 million euros a month, Finance Minister Christos Staikouras told state broadcaster ERT on Saturday.

He noted that the measures affect 68% of businesses in areas marked "red" for rising coronavirus infections, such as Athens and Thessaloniki.
